1937

With the government approval of the written request from the founder of Xiamen University, Mr. Chen Jiageng, Xiamen University changed to national in 1937, and Sa Bendong, the physicists, electrical engineering expert and educator served as the first president. During the war of resistance against Japan, he organized Xiamen University to move to Changting, leaded whole university to overcome all the difficulties in an extremely hard situation, and turned Xiamen University into “the most perfect school in the east of Calcutta " at that time, thus laying a solid foundation for further development of Xiamen University in later.

1940

Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering was founded in the autumn of 1940 with Professor Zhu Jiaxin as the first department chair. The department developed very fast, and the number of student was quickly increased from initial 9 to 202 in 1994 academic year, thus the biggest department in Xiamen University at that time.

1944

As one of four earliest universities providing aviation education in China, Xiamen University built up department of Aeronautic in April 1944. The department was directed by Huang Canglin, the dean of Engineering Institute until Professor Ye Yunli served as the first department chair in 1948. The figure was a photo of aeronautical engineering students in front of a plane for a practice in Xiamen Heshan airport at that time.

1972

Department of Automation started from establishing the major of Computing Technology and Automation Control in 1972. Department of Computer and System Science was founded in 1982 with Professor Li Wenqing as the first department chair, and it was renamed as department of Automation in 1996.

2015

School of Aerospace Engineering was established in April 6, 2015 by merging the departments of Aeronautics, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, and Automation. Yin Zeyong (academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering) served as the first dean.
